Eyal Zisser is fountain of knowledge when it comes to Syria and Lebanon. "Commanding Syria" discusses Hafiz al-Asad's rule as an introduction and examines Bashar in detail. This book is the answer the to questions posed by Flynt Leverett in his 2005 book "Inheriting Syria: Bashar's Trial by Fire."

Zisser's understanding of the subject matter is complete. While it is clearly too early to write the full history of Bashar al-Asad's rule, this book gives the most in-depth and thorough appraisal of the challanges facing Bashar and Syria, and examines how Asad has reacted.

In the study of Middle Eastern History, it is difficult for the common reader to find and purchase a balanced book with enough detail and at the same time, written in a style that makes reading fun. Simply put, it's hard to find scholarly research that's fun to read and understandable to the average person.

If you've been searching for any level of understanding regarding Syria, this is your book. If you find yourself curious to learn more about Hafiz al-Asad, I highly recommend another book by Zisser, "Asad's Legacy: Syria in Transition."
