the main obstacle to peace is probably hamas' unwillingness to recognize israel. it seems like the palestinians were more moderate during the arafat/clinton years, even though there was no peace deal. with the rise of hamas there isn't even a pretense of accepting israels right to exist. its hard to see any real progress being made any time soon with those conditions.
